Shreveport-Bossier Getaways - APRIL 2015

Spring Festival Season Hits Full Swing

If you find yourself in need of weekend plans any time between now and July, Shreveport-Bossier has got you covered! A full slate of festivals kicks off with the Holiday in Dixie and Artbreak festivals in April and continues practically every weekend through May and June. Some of the most popular annual events in Shreveport-Bossier are on the horizon, including the 2015 Barksdale Air Force Base Air Show featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, May 2-3, and Mudbug Madness Festival, May 21-24. Rural communities get in on the action, as well, with popular events like Oil City’s Gusher Days Festival, May 2, and Blanchard’s Poke Salad Festival, May 4-9.

To keep up with all of the great spring and summer events coming up, check out the Shreveport-Bossier Fun Guide, the official arts and culture calendar of Shreveport-Bossier. If you love barbecue, two upcoming events in Shreveport-Bossier will tempt your taste buds. Wine & Swine, an annual whole hog barbecue and wine tasting held at Wine Country Bistro and Bottle Shop in Shreveport, will return, 3-6 p.m., Sunday, April 12. The event will feature more than 60 wines being poured, an exclusive small-batch brew from Great Raft Brewing created especially for Wine & Swine and – of course – lots of barbecue. Visit our blog for more details.

The Ark-La-Tex Ambassadors BBQ Cook-Off, a National Barbecue Festival-sanctioned barbecue competition, will take place in downtown Shreveport, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, April 25. The cook-off attracts teams from throughout the South to compete for cash prizes and bragging rights in categories including pork ribs, brisket and people’s choice. Team registration is now underway (more info here) and there are details about how the public can enjoy the cook-off on our blog post about the event.

The Louisiana Office of Tourism has designated 2015 a year-long celebration of unique Louisiana food and drink. Each month, “Getaways” will celebrate an outstanding local dish or drink by featuring a review from, the official destination blog of Shreveport-Bossier: Louisiana’s Other Side.

Explore the Boom or Bust Byway This Spring

The Boom or Bust Byway, a 130-mile scenic byway that follows Highway 2 and is defined by the Louisiana/Texas border on the west and the town of Homer to the east, was introduced in 2012 with the goal of encouraging rural tourism. If you haven’t yet explored this scenic byway, the arrival of spring provides a great opportunity to see the region in full bloom. The Boom or Bust Byway route passes through such historic communities as Vivian, Plain Dealing, Sarepta and Homer. Interpretive kiosks explain the history of each community and highlight points of interest along the way.

A free, self-guided tour app is also available for Apple and Android users. This GPS-driven tour will notify users when they’re nearing points of interest such as historic sites and museums, and will even play a short film outlining the significance of each site. Mobile users can download the app in the Google Play and iTunes stores by searching for “N LA Byways.” Anyone without access to a mobile device may check out a GPS Ranger from the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau’s downtown visitor center at 629 Spring Street, Shreveport, La.
