What's new in Shreveport-Bossier
Film Center Celebrates Successful First Year, New Film Projects Slated
The Robinson Film Center, which this spring celebrated its one-year anniversary, in downtown Shreveport has proved to be a great compliment to the growing film industry in Shreveport-Bossier. The dynamic venue highlights independent, international and classic cinema. The arts organization also serves as a resource for film production and media education. The film center has hosted several special screenings featuring Val Kilmer, Oliver Stone, Margaret Avery and other stars. Not only a great place for movies, the film center is great for a delicious lunch or dinner in its Abby Singer’s Bistro.
Shreveport-Bossier has become a key filming location for Hollywood productions, attracting international attention. Dozens of films have been produced here, including the HBO hit series, “True Blood,” Jack Black’s newest film, “Year One,” Oliver Stone’s “W,” “Premonition,” “The Guardian,” “Mr. Brooks,” “Factory Girl” and more. While here, you just might get a chance to meet a superstar – or become one yourself!
Since 2005, more than four dozen films have wrapped in Shreveport-Bossier. For the first half of 2008, Shreveport brought in $202 million in production, including Oliver Stone’s “W” production about former President George W. Bush.
The largest of the productions to wrap was “The Guardian,” a Touchstone Pictures and Beacon Pictures production starring Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher. Built for the filming of “The Guardian,” the Louisiana Wave Studio is the only computer-controlled precision wave-making facility designed for and dedicated to the making of motion pictures in the United States. The facility is the second largest wave tank facility in the world.
Upcoming projects include:
“Mechanic,” starring Jason Statham, star of “The Transporter” and “Crank” films.
Director: Simons West; Film Studio: NuImage/Millennium; Filming Dates: Summer 2009
“Straw Dogs,” starring James Marsden, star of “X-Men and “27 Dresses” films.
Screen Gems/Battle Plan Productions; Director: Rod Lurie; Filming Dates: August 2009
“The Exterminators,” (2nd season – A&E).
September Films USA; June 8-Sept. 15, 2009

Chef Spices Up the Kitchen With Unique Flair
While growing up in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Henry Rodriguez’s grandmother Rosa instilled in him the ingredients to fuel his passion for food.
“She taught me to love food, and to enjoy cooking and serving it,” he said.
Now the head chef of Boomtown Casino and Hotel’s 1800° Prime Steakhouse, Rodriguez brings a world of experience with him from restaurants in such places as Puerto Rico, St. Louis, Mo., Miami, Fla. and New York City.
Rodriguez’s introduction to food dates back to his family’s many years of experience in the restaurant business in San Juan. As Rodriguez ventured out on his own, he decided to earn formal culinary training from the IBC – a culinary program in San Juan. After moving to the United States, he then studied hospitality and tourism at Southern Illinois University.
For nine months, Chef Rodriguez has brought his one-of-a-kind flair to 1800° Prime Steakhouse. His home town of San Juan, Puerto Rico has had a tremendous influence on his cooking style.
“I wanted to bring a little of my heritage to the restaurant,” he said. “Here in Louisiana, it’s rather easy to incorporate Caribbean ingredients into anything I cook given that Creole cooking is very similar to Caribbean ways.”
But Rodriguez didn’t forget to bring his own panache and spice to the restaurant. Although 1800° Prime is best known for its decadent steaks, the entire menu is fabulous, he said.
One of his favorite menu items to prepare is the Scallops de Española – a savory dish combining large scallops and shitake mushrooms, accompanied by shallots, sage and champagne, which give it a heavenly aroma that will leave its patrons coming back for more.
Recipe: Scallops a la Espanola
Serving: Dinner for Two
Ingredients
- 10 Large size Cleaned Scallops (U-10)
- ¼ Cup Seasoned Flour (Flour, Salt, Pepper and Granulated Garlic)
- 1 Tbsp. Minced Shallots
- 3 Fresh Sage Leaves Finely Chopped
- 10 Saffron Strings
- 1 Cup Julianne Shitake Mushrooms
- 1/8 Cup Champagne
- 1 Cup Heavy Cream
- Olive Oil
Pre-heat the oven to 500 degrees. On a round plate, pour the flour and coat the scallops top and bottom only.
On the stove have a skillet on high heat and pour olive oil just to coat the pan. When the skillet is hot, gently add the scallops flour down, sear and turn over. You want a nice gold brown color – four minute maximum cook time.
Lower the heat to medium, take scallops out of the skillet and place into another pan. Place pan of scallops in the pre-heated oven. Immediately add shallot, saffron, sage and shitake mushrooms back to the skillet that’s on the stove. Sautee the medley until the mushrooms start to sweat, then add the champagne and let it reduce until almost gone. Then, add heavy cream. Bring to a boil and shut the stove off immediately.
Take the scallops out of the oven and place on a plate or a bowl and coat scallops with the Española Sauce.
Serve.
