Who will battle it out in this year's Independence Bowl?

Everyone is eager to find out if their team will play in the 2004 Independence Bowl. The wait will soon be over! The Independence Bowl will announce on Dec. 5, 2004, which teams will be invited to participate in this year's bowl game.

There are a number of ancillary events you won't want to miss, like the FCA Athletes Breakfast and the Autograph Party on Dec. 26, and the Minuteman Luncheon and the Pep Rally on Dec. 27. Game kickoff is at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 28.

After the teams are announced, local hotels will begin accepting reservations for the blocks of rooms set aside for fans. Rooms sell out quickly, but there are many additional rooms available in towns surrounding Shreveport-Bossier City. Also, many local rooms become available as game day nears and people cancel reservations for rooms booked in excess of their need. Although the bureau does not make room reservations, we are committed to helping everyone find a place to stay, and we call local hotels every day to check availability. The results will be posted each morning at www.shreveport-bossier.org/indy_bowl/. You may also call us at 888-45-VISIT to check availability.

Have you been naughty or nice?

It's that time of year again when Santa makes his list and checks it twice. We hope you haven't been naughty, or at least didn't get caught at it!

This year, Shreveport-Bossier City is going all out to make it easy for Santa to find us! In addition to a ton of Christmas events, the city is lit up like . . ., well, like a Christmas tree! Local residents are really in the holiday spirit and you'll enjoy driving through our neighborhoods to see their handiwork. Check out our Christmas event calendar and make your travel plans today!

Louisiana Boardwalk on track to open this spring

The Red River is the picturesque setting for Shreveport-Bossier City's spectacular shopping and entertainment destination, Louisiana Boardwalk, now under construction. Joining a vibrant casino district nestled along the majestic riverfront for nearly a half-mile, Louisiana Boardwalk's dynamic blend of shopping, marina, restaurants and entertainment will attract tourists and locals alike.

Louisiana Boardwalk has easy access from Interstate 20 and the famous neon-lit Texas Street Bridge. Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World has been open for more than a year now and anchors the north end of the Louisiana Boardwalk. Construction on the rest of the project will soon be complete. The scheduled opening date is March 18, 2005. In addition to riverfront dining, a carousel and the Magnolia Belle trolley, look for these great restaurants and outlet shops:

  • Regal Theaters

  • Zodo's Bowling & Beyond

  • Big Dog Sportswear

  • Rack Room Shoes

  • Wilsons Leather Outlet

  • Dress Barn

  • rue21

  • Vitamin World

  • adidas

  • OshKosh B'gosh

  • GUESS?

  • Buffalo Wild Wings

  • San Francisco Oven

  • Hooters

  • Joe's Crab Shack

  • Cold Stone Creamery

Barbecue restaurant adds spice to Red River District

Shreveport's Red River District will soon be home to Santa Maria Barbecue. The new restaurant will feature barbecue and seafood entrees, hamburgers, po-boys, salads and appetizers, daily lunch specials, a barbecue buffet and happy hour. Barbecue lovers will be able to enjoy their favorite menu items by the end of December. Owner Doc Sheffield has been in the food service industry for 30 years and is already known for the catfish he serves at Wilson's Bistineau Inn.
